Attendance

Attendance is becoming our top priority this year. Our curriculum is designed to build on itself day by day. So if your student misses a day, they have missed out on important concepts in each subject.
Yes, we can send home missing work, but we are not able to make up for the instructional time that was missed.
We understand that students get sick. We ask that you make sure students are brought to school on time and vacations are planned accordingly.

Why Every Day Matters

Good attendance is a habit that will help your children do well in school.
●Children can suffer academically if they miss 10% of the school year. (That’s 18
days for districts on a five-day schedule. That can happen before you know
it—even by missing just one day every two weeks.
●It doesn’t matter if these absences are excused or unexcused. They all
represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn.
●Attendance matters as much in kindergarten as later years. Studies show many
children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade can struggle
academically in later years. They often have trouble mastering reading by the
end of third grade.
●By middle and high school, chronic absence is a strong warning sign that
without support, a student is at risk of dropping out.
●Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, slowing down instruction.

ELD

From Mrs. Kenworthy

ELD October Update

October is an exciting month for ELD as we wrap up beginning-of-year testing and start putting our groups in place! We are using testing results and classroom information to better understand each student’s language needs and determine how we can best support them throughout the year.

As testing wraps up, we are beginning our small ELD groups, where students will have opportunities to build vocabulary, strengthen communication skills, and grow their confidence using English. We are also continuing to push into classrooms and work alongside teachers to provide additional support during instruction.

We are looking forward to getting our groups up and running, establishing routines, and helping our students feel confident and successful as they continue developing their English language skills!

Title 1

From Ms. Pescitelli

During September, students completed fall screening assessments to help teachers understand their current skills, set goals, and identify students who may need additional support.

Students may have completed Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, Star Math, mySAEBRS, and/or quick CBM skill checks. Kindergarten and 1st grade students also completed Oregon’s required dyslexia screening. These assessments give us a starting point for instruction and help us monitor student growth throughout the year.

Fall testing results will be sent home later this month. If you have questions about your child’s results, please reach out to Ms. Pescitelli

Rockwood Preparatory Academy is now a Title I Schoolwide School. Families will receive a School-Parent-Student Compact outlining how we will work together to support student success. Please review, sign, and return the compact to your child’s teacher.

Science

From Mr. Bruihler

In October, students will continue wrapping up Unit 1 in science. All grades are currently working on Life Sciences. Lower grades are learning about habitats and animal needs, and Upper grades are making food chains and modeling joints and tendons. Ask your student about what they are learning! Each grade has different projects that will help them learn about living creatures in different ways. HIGHLIGHT: In October, 5th grade students will have a hands-on experience where they learn about decomposers through experiments with worms! 2nd graders will design and work on building a bird feeder as they learn about different food sources.

PE

From Ms. Qutub & Ms. R

Happy Fall! October is here and with it cooler weather and more PE activites! This month our game unit will be cageball and our sport unit will be soccer.  All grade levels will get to paricipate in these units and I know everyone is very excited for soccer :) Please remember, if your child isn't wearing appropriate shoes, they do not get to participate.  Also, if your child should be sitting out for any reason we need either a parent note or a doctors note, otherwise they are expected to join in! Thank you, Team PE

Parenting with Love & Logic

Choose Choices Instead of Threats

Wise parents avoid power struggles by giving away all the control they don’t need so that they can maintain the control they do need. One way to break the threat cycle is by giving lots of small choices when everything is going well.
Here are some examples of threats with suggested choices as alternatives:
Threat: “You’re either going to pick up your toys or lose them!”
Choice:“Do you want to pick up your toys or would you rather I pick them up?”

Threat: “If you don’t get home on time, you’re losing your car keys!”
Choice: “Would you rather get home on time or stay out past curfew and lose the car keys?”

Threat: “Stop arguing with each other or get out of the car!”
Choice: “Would you rather stop arguing or do I need to think of some consequences after we get home?”
Deliver Choices with Empathy
